Abstract
Tropical mangrove forests, distributed circumtropically in the inter-tidal region between sea and land in the tropical and sub-tropical latitudes, are among the most productive and bio-diverse wetlands on Earth. The proposed research will be the first application of multi-temporal Landsat data to assess and monitor mangrove forest dynamics of the world from 1990 to 2005. For the first time, we will be able to prepare a wall-to-wall map of the remaining mangrove forests of the world using Landsat data. Additionally, it will be the first experiment to quantify the historical mangrove forest cover change, and to identify major deforestation fronts, causes, and consequences world-wide.
