Abstract
This study is undertaken to better understand: How can an improved understanding of the value of diverse ecosystem services help diverse stakeholders (state agencies, local communities etc.) govern their resources in ways that better maintain those services including biodiversity derived from upper tributary watersheds? To address this overarching question of policy- and practice-relevance, we undertake two reviews and three case studies. The first review synthesizes what is known about ecosystem services provided by upper tributary watersheds in Southeast Asia and similar settings elsewhere in tropics. The second review synthesizes experiences with different national policies, community-based, and other institutional arrangements and governance processes that have aimed to maintain and conserve particular or a set of ecosystem services derived from upper tributary watersheds. These two regional reviews are complimented by a set of three original and more in-depth case studies in which substantial prior work on services and governance has already been conducted. The Indonesian case study will be carried out in the Sungai Kahayan catchment in Central Kalimantan. The Thailand case study will be carried out in the Mae Hae watershed of the Upper Ping River in northern Thailand. The Chinese case study will be carried out at the Supa watershed in Longling county, Yunnan province.
